The recent Super Bowl provided context for a study in contrasts. Both head coaches, Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith are talented, yet humble men. Each possesses a deeply held, biblically-oriented faith (the networks had to hate that). Based on the comments of others, each gives his family unusual priority throughout the year, regardless of the demanding their demanding schedules. What a stark contrast to the soap opera, which played out here in the DFW area during the past four years, during the Bill Parcells era.
The Big Tuna was in reality the Big Ego.
Even Jerry Jones, the Cowboys owner, know himself for his ego, described the four years as a period of "walking around on egg shells." Parcells was know for taking credit when things went well and blaming others when things went poorly.
The exciting thing about Dungy's success and Parcell's failure (surely one doesn't label paying a fellow 20+ million dollars for nothing success), is the proof it provides one can be a Godly man and succeed in even the most competitive of arenas.
Will it happen as often? Unlikely. The world's rules are oriented toward the world's values. However, though uncommon, it was fun to watch a fine man humbly enjoy the praise his respectful, other-oriented style deserved.
Coach Dungy, thank you for your example. Enjoy a great off-season.
Tuna, please clean up the egg shells on the way out.
